Politecnico di Milano is a scientific-technological university which trains engineers, architects and industrial designers. The PoliMi unit will be hosted at the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering (CMIC) “Giulio Natta” of the Politecnico di Milano. The Department (www.chem.polimi.it ) was established in 2001, through unification of three pre-existing chemistry-oriented departments. One of these was the scientific home of the Chemistry Nobel Prize winner Giulio Natta (shared with K. Ziegler in 1963, for stereospecific polymerization). Personnel of the Department, composed by about 120 permanent researchers plus a large numbers of post-doc researchers, PhD students and other collaborators, participates in many study programs, and in particular to the Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. programs in Chemical Engineering and in Materials Engineering. The mission of CMIC Department is to promote and to support the central role of chemistry, chemical engineering and materials science and engineering throughout the whole spectra of new technologies by offering advanced expertise. This is attested by the contributions to basic science (scientific papers published in a wide range of high impact factor international journals), by the international patents and by the contracts with small, medium and large (often multinational) companies covering a broad distribution of sectors. Research projects and activities, covering a wide range of fields within pure and applied chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science and technology, are funded by national programs (PRIN, FIRB), European projects, private foundations, contracts with large as well as local small-medium enterprises.

Facilities hosted in the Department: from the chemical point of view, PoliMi has free access to state-ofthe-art equipment for high-resolution multi-nuclear NMR spectrometers (BrukerAvance 500; Bruker DRX 500; Bruker ARX 400); MS (Electrospray Ionization source (ESI), quadrupole ion trap detector (QITD), Bruker Esquire 3000+), together with HPLC-MS apparatus and UV and FT-IR spectrometers. For routine analysis of products, the unit possesses a good equipment and expertise in HPLC (Agilent, 1 instrument), GC (Dani, 2 instruments) and GC-MS (Agilent, 2 instruments) techniques. In the experimental material science Section, coating synthesis, deposition and material characterization facilities are available. In particular, glove box for controlled atmosphere reaction, small scale lab reactor for controlled pressure and temperature synthesis, chemical hoods, ovens for controlled coating densification will be used in the synthesis of hybrid sol-gel coatings. Dip coater and spray coater for controlled deposition of thin films on polymeric substrates and Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition reactor for surface cleaning/activation are also available. The laboratory activity relies on a wide range of analytical tools, characterization techniques and equipment for electrolytic, physical and chemical vapour deposition.
